Game design

Mid-core play and the length of a session

A player’s available time and appetite for complexity are different things. Short sessions can still contain meaningful planning if the game explains its state and lets a returning player resume quickly.

Specify what a player learns in the first session and what carries into the next. Avoid using an audience label to conceal an unclear progression system.

Test the pause and return experience. Give a returning player a concise goal reminder and a readable state before demanding another decision. This makes session design concrete.
