Archon: board strategy meets action

Archon is interesting because a strategic board encounter can turn into a direct action contest. The two layers ask different questions: where should a piece move, and how well can the player control it when a battle begins?

Study how piece identity survives the change of scale. Range, mobility and arena conditions can make a board advantage feel different during combat. A hybrid design needs both layers to contribute rather than letting one erase every choice made in the other.

For a design exercise, sketch a small board with three piece types and one arena rule for each. Explain how a positional advantage helps without guaranteeing victory. This is a practical way to explore the relationship between planning and execution.
