Flynn’s Arcade and the design of an arcade space

A themed arcade uses more than cabinets to establish its identity. Signage, lighting, music and the arrangement of waiting space influence how people approach a game and whether they understand that they can join in.

Flynn’s Arcade at Disney’s California Adventure is a useful subject for thinking about the relationship between a fictional setting and physical play. Keep the discussion focused on spatial design rather than assuming current opening times or availability.

For a room-scale design exercise, place three games on a plan and draw player movement between them. Leave room behind active players, make controls visible and provide a clear route that does not cut through someone’s play space.
