Game development

Compare retro prototypes fairly

Comparing small games is easier when every game receives the same amount of attention. Play a first round to learn the controls, then another round to see whether the rules reward that learning.

Write down the action you took and the feedback you received. Distinguish a difficult rule from a poorly explained one. A game can be challenging while still making cause and effect clear.

When collecting preferences, ask players why they chose a favorite and disclose the evaluation criteria. A careful playtest table can show which designs communicate best.
